  1. I would probably choose organic, just because it’s the one I know most about, but I so want to learn more about local, and this read has definitely helped. I know at Brown they have a Si-Fi meal plan where you get local and often seasonal goods; I hope to get on that next semester

  2. I try to be aware as well- we have a lot of great local farms in Charleston and I go to the farmers market when I can. When I can’t, I try to search for the “local” signs at the food store. Organic is not as important to me, but I try when I can on that one too

  3. I love buying seasonal foods because it is always a new treat each season. I am not someone who eats pumpkin all season, because I love the excitement of having it ‘new’ again in the fall. 🙂 I do agree with buying local – I try as much as I can.

Now that I’m in culinary school, I’ve learned to buy the best period. regardless of where it is grown, or what state it comes from. with that being said a large majority of the time that IS local produce, meat etc. I would not , not buy an apple from washington state if it was the best apple i could purchase. even if there was one from CT (where im from) right next to it looking subpar.

@Allison, This is interesting. Would you like to elaborate? I have found that when comparing seasonal foods, the local ones almost always look better because they have less handling and travel time. Have you found that to not be true? I do understand that there is a difference between purchasing for personal use (where presentation does not matter AS much) and professional use, but I want to hear more of your thoughts!

  5. If I had a choice I’d always choose local (which is usually seasonal) because not only does it taste good, but helps local farmers. However, if I can’t go to my farmer’s market, I do try to buy local when I can at Whole Foods or organic. It matters a lot to me and I would rather spend money on good food than anything else 🙂

I try for local- which is usually seasonal too, unless it’s grown in a hot house. I love going to farmer’s markets!
I feel like organic is the least important to me. I want good flavor first and foremost.

  7. oh I love your new layout! It fits with the spring theme (or has it always been this way? Perhaps I haven’t visited in awhile…).

Certain fruits and vegetables I try to buy organic but there are some which I don’t (I forgot the list…but fruits with thick skins that you peel off such as oranges I don’t feel the need to buy organic). As for what’s local…I’m a bit spoiled since I live in California so almost everything is local (and good produce is usually seasonal as well).

  8. I left a comment of a similar nature on your other thread. We get the majority of our veggies from a CSA which is seasonal, local, organic and grown without the use of manure (which is common with organic). The rest of our stuff I usually get from Trader Joe’s. I’m like you, certain foods I love I buy regardless if it’s local or not such as mangos. I feel like I do the best I can and I’m not going to feel guilty about that!

If I could only buy from one place it’s would be my CSA b/c it’s all three things. If that wasn’t an option I’d stick with (mostly) organic. I just don’t like the idea of chemicals on my food.

  9. I agree with your thoughts on tomatoes…I cannot eat them other than in the summer! They taste ammmmazing when they are in season, and any other time they just taste like water! Cannot wait for the summer =)

  10. I prefer to produce in this order, seasonally, locally (which state above, usually go hand in hand) and then organic.

  11. Jen

I agree with Allison K – I prefer seasonal, then local, then organic. Some foods are more important to buy organic that others (like soft skinned produce), but I definitely won’t buy a peach mid-winter, just because it is organic!

  12. DEFINITELY seasonal if I had to pick just one of those! in colorado if it’s seasonal, it’s also likely local and organic as well 🙂 you really just can’t beat the flavor and texture of something in season!

  13. There are the beautiful artichokes!!!

Eating seasonally is something I’d like to become more serious about. Great post!

  14. Amazing post, Sabrina!
    Such beautiful flowers… 🙂
    Have an amazing weekend, girl!

  15. I just found your blog and I love it. I have spent the last 30 minutes just reading!!! 🙂 Side not: has anyone ever told you that you look like Sandra Bullock?! Haha!

    Happy Friday!

  16. All there are important to me, all for different reasons. I love the idea of buying locally and knowing what kind of people I am buying produce from. Are these quality individuals who treat their employees well? I think the treatment of workers is an important aspect to consider.

The large grocery stores here (in Denver) are good about pointing out local produce. It might not always be organic, but then not all the produce at Whole Foods is organic.

  17. I try to buy and eat seasonal items because they taste much better and are usually cheaper. Certain foods like strawberries and tomatoes are strictly summer pleasures and taste blah any other time. When the Farmer’s Market is open I shop there, but if not I try to buy organic produce at the grocery store. I have an awesome organic market/grocer that tries to sell local produce as much as possible. I look for local items and typically buy the veggies I like that are on sale that week. I don’t always buy local or organic because I don’t have the money, but I do try to buy the organic on items known to have the highest level of pesticide contamination (apples, celery, berries, spinach, etc).

I always buy organic bananas because they’re not expensive and I think they taste so much better.

I’m so excited because we joined a local, organic CSA this year. May 1 can’t come soon enough!!

PS I just wrote a guest post for Eating Bender about eating seasonal and local produce.

  18. i’m not the biggest organic eater, so i definitely enjoy the seasonal eating! it’s tasty and fresh.

however, i wish the rain would stop and the outside looked as pretty as that colorful flower picture! pish posh.

  19. We have some great Farmer’s Markets where I live and so I get the best of all worlds! Usually I am able to buy seasonal organic produce and I LOVE it. It always tastes amazing and fresh!

  20. You need to come visit me! Not only am I surrounded by farm stands but I am surrounded by farms. You don’t need to ask them if they grew it – you can see where they grew it!

  21. I just hopped over her from your more recent post. I think seasonality is key and I would love to buy local as much as possible. Sometimes, local might not be certified organic (which that doesn’t even say that much by USDA standards) because it is an expensive and lengthy process so I’ll google the farm or ask the seller if at a market. I buy most things organic though when I can.
