The RI Lobstah Roll
I don’t often miss Rhode Island, aside from missing my family and friends, but when I miss something, I really miss it.
This summer the absence of Narragansett beach, clam cakes and chowdah, shrimp cocktails, and lobstah rolls were deafening. Deafening from the loud sound my hungry belly makes.
I popped over to RI for the day yesterday to work on a top secret project with Nasoya, and I requested a seafood dinner out with my family to satisfy my craving for clam chowder that I’ve had all summer. There was no time for Newport so we settled on Federal Hill’s Oyster Bar.
However, my aunt said their lobster roll is much better than their chowder. How could I resist? So I satisfied my other RI craving of a lobster roll with fries. So did my nonna and my aunt. We were triplets! My dad had sushi, which is a relatively new phenomenon to see.
Lobster rolls are heavenly little sandwiches on naturally buttery lobster, crisp celery, and just a touch of mayo. It is served on a hot dog bun which seems strange to me, and I would prefer it on a nice hard roll, but there must be some tradition to that somewhere.
I still need to have that clam chowder, and luckily PB and I are heading to RI this weekend for some quality time with our family and two visiting cousins from Jordan. I will not leave without a bowl of creamy New England clam chowder.
Speaking of the weekend in RI, Rhode Islanders are funny. There is a small possibility that a hurricane will hit this weekend, and people are already stocking up on milk, eggs, bottled water and batteries.
I love my home state, and while Philly now owns a piece of my heart, Rhode Island will always feel most like home.
P.S. In case you didn’t know, RhodeyGirl comes from Rhode Island Girl. I know I should have dropped the “e” but it is cooler with it.
I would definitely miss that lobster roll too!
I can second this. Nothing like lobtash rolls and chowdah. Just another reason why New England is the best place!
There are so many seafood things that I’m missing out on – like chowder and lobster rolls….seafood has sort of always given me the creeps…but I’m over than now. I just don’t know much about seafood so I never know what to order! Guess I just need to start ordering because that lobster roll looks good!
I hear ya! I spent a good chunk of my childhood in New England and the lobster there is like no where else. Glad you got to enjoy some of that deliciousness. Can’t wait to hear more about the top secret project!!
oh yum…i’ve never been to new england and i have always wanted to go and try the notorious seafood! sounds amazing ๐
You didn’t get weenies?! Just kidding.
Glad you had a great dinner with your family!
Enjoy the Rhode Island treats. I always make it a priority to go to Aunt Carrie’s for Clam Cakes, Chowdah and Banana Cream Pie.
I have yet to try a Lobster roll or clam chowder. Where should I go in Newport?
I didn’t know that about people stocking up because of the hurricane. I am planning on grocery shopping today and now I’m dreading it, haha. I guess it’s because I’m from TX that I didn’t even think to stock up on anything.
Haha I laughed out loud when you mentioned the Rhode Islanders already preparing for a potential hurricane. I’m in South East Florida (where we seem to have a magnet for hurricanes hah)and unless it’s a Category 3+ and 24 hours away from hitting… there are no preparations to be had. Us crazy Floridians… ๐
PS- that Lobster Roll looks killer!
Lobster rolls are definitely supposed to be served on a hot dog roll! ๐ I don’t know where it originated, but as a former East Coasterner I can say that it’s the way to go. It has something to do with the fact that lobster rolls are comfort food. Down and dirty, low-brow, comfort food that just happens to have one really expensive ingredient! It goes without saying that I also prefer my lobster rolls with nothing but some mayo and celery- none of this crazy “scallion” business! ๐
Me too! The best way is on a buttered, toasted hot dog bun (not the kind they use with hot wieners, has to be the New England style bun). Born and raised in Warwick, Rhode Island (The Ocean State), still live here and will be going to the docks in Point Judith this weekend to get our lobsters right off the boats, will make our own lobster rolls!
small possibility??? the track is headed right over RI!
@sara, REALLY? do you know when and can you send me a link? Weather.com must be too unreliable! I need to inform my family, although they already have plenty of milk, eggs, water, and batteries HA!
YUMMMM.
I think it is still up in the air as to what RI ia getting, at least as of noon on channel 10 in providence.
I’m a huge fan of Aunt Carrie’s and also Blount’s chowder; one of our favorite things to do when we don’t have time to hit the beach is go to Cresent Park in Riverside and have Blount’s seafood and chowder!
Blount chowder IS THE BEST! I go to the carousel with the kids, but every now and then we go to the Blount Marketplace in Warren, RI and buy the chowder there in large bags. Plus they have other soups they sell too.
I’ve always wanted to make this recipe! You’ve given me the inspiration I needed!

Oh yes, the state is abuzz about the forecast. Remember Gloria? Haha!
I love chowdah, but my favorite local treat is a slushy cup of Del’s – no straw. One must shake the cup to melt the frozen chunks.
I have NEVER had one of these… and GAAH I’ve always wanted one. They look amazing. I want my first one to be made by someone else, while I am visiting the East Coast… ๐

@Kristina @ spabettie, oops – sorry that happened? The thought of a lobster roll got me all excitable.
Seafood is always a must when I go home to Massachusetts. Its just not the same in Iowa!
I wish I lived in a state the bordered the ocean. Our seafood in Idaho is terrible!
You can order lobsters and have them mailed to you. Cost a bit – but for a splurge or special treat. They send the overnight I believe.
this looks so heavenly I cannot even put my jealousy into words! yummmmmmm
