New England Clam Chowder
Never order New England clam chowder if you aren’t in New England.
Trust me.
Real New England Clam Chowder is heavenly. It is creamy, with small chunks of potato, clams, and celery. The best way to eat it is with a few oyster crackers dropped in every few bites.
When I was little we used to go to Boston all the time on the weekends. We often ate at this restaurant in the hotel in Copley Plaza that had a dinner buffet. While the parents and brothers went for salad, fish, baked potatoes and more, my cousin R and I went for the chowder. We would fill cup after cup of it until we were full. I never liked oyster crackers as a kid, so I would give her all of mine. Those were my favorite dinners!
Here are my favorite places in Rhode Island to find delicious clam chowder:
Hemenway’s in Providence
22 Bowen’s Wharf in Newport
The Black Pearl in Newport
The Mooring in Newport
I JUST had chowder a few days ago in Rhode Island, but I am already missing it.
What is your favorite regional food?!

I love clam chowder – it is also my husband’s favorite soup! My favorite food here would have to be Primanti’s sandwiches – they have fries and coleslaw ON them!
I love Hemenway’s Clam Chowder – Hemenway’s is one of my favorite restaurants in Providence.
I grew up in New Jersey and I have to say I have pizza every time I go home – pizza in New England just can’t compare!
I haven’t had real clam chowder in AGES. I’m not a huge fan of the stuff, but when you’re on Cape Cod, it just tastes like the perfect thing. Favorite regional Philly food is definitely soft pretzels from Lancaster. No one else does ’em better!
I like to consider myself a clam chowder connoisseur…everywhere I go if its on the menu I order it. And I believe you might be right! It is my favorite food. And surprisingly, the best I’ve had is in a little diner in my hometown in Upstate NY. Clam Chowder = heaven in the form of clam, cream & potatoes.
I am so looking forward to a bowl while I am up here. I love any fresh shellfish…oysters in particular!
definitely Tex-Mex! it’s so good and flavorful and SPICY 🙂 i would love to try real chowder though…it always looks and smells so amazing!
I agree some regional dishes are best in that area, like gumbos only in Louisana. But my fave dish from home(Louisana) is Red Beans and rice.
@Marg, Yes I just spelled my state wrong, haha, still early!
Ugh, I live in Idaho and all Seafood (aside from local things like Salmon) is TERRIBLE!
I guess, my favorite regional/local cuisine is the potato! 🙂
Jessica – are you from Florida? I remember finding Primanti’s brothers in Ft. Lauderdale and I thought fries on the sandwich was the best thing since sliced bread!
I guess I would have to say Farmstand pies as New York is known for it’s apples and farms!
Chicago hot dogs from Portillos or Deep Dish Pizza…so good, yet so bad!
Its kind of cute when non-New England states think they know what real clam chowder is!
I really want a cup of clam chowder now!
