R 5 month update
A little late and a little short, but here’s R’s 5 month update. The 6 month one is coming next week. Whoops!
The world is simply fascinating to R right now. He wants to look at everything, then touch it, and then eat it. If he’s nursing and hears the tiniest of sounds, he immediately whips his head around to see where it’s coming from. When we play music for him, he cocks his head to one side to listen. If there is anything within reach (lamp, hair, food, clothing, toys, electronics) it’s in his hands and then his mouth in 2 seconds flat.
Our new house has a bit more space, so we got R a jumperoo. He loves playing in it, but still hasn’t learned to jump. I hope he learns soon because he doesn’t know the fun he’s missing.
We have a rhythm every afternoon. As soon as the babysitter leaves and my work is done, I put him in his stroller and go for a nice long walk. We always end up at daddy’s office where we pick him up and walk home together as a family. On days when the weather doesn’t cooperate or I have too many tasks to do at home, R is a bit whiny until his dad comes home. The minute Trig walks in the door R is all smiles and giggles. It is shocking how fast his mood changes.
Our bedtime routine is always evolving. At the 5 month mark his bedtime was so early- like 6:15 PM – but he started sleeping longer stretches so we went with it. We have since changed that because of daylight savings, which I’ll share more about next week.
R wants so badly to crawl. We can’t put him in button PJs anymore because he kicks right out of the snaps until his feet are free. He can do full circle rotations, but hasn’t quite figured out how to move forward most of the time.
One day Trig was watching news while I ran upstairs for a minute, leaving R on the playmat. Trig heard giggling and turned his head and R had scooted right off the mat and was watching TV happily. Our son will do anything to sneak a moment or two of TV, even scooting on to the wood floors!
Since he hasn’t quite figured out how to move, he gets frustrated when a toy is out of his reach. This usually leads to a dinosaur scream and full on cobra move- arms flailed and upper body raised.
Drool is everywhere, all the time.
R is also very expressive. Aside from his eyes, this is what he gets most from me. He is emotional and his facial expressions are so intense.
He loves the sunshine, even when he’s sitting on the couch. When the light comes through at just the right angle, he tries to grab it with his hands.
We tried to give R some food, but he wasn’t into it. He did like scrunching his legs up in the high chair though. It takes photos like the below one to remember he is still a little baby.
It’s really hard to get him to stay still for any moment, even when he’s tired.
He’s sitting up pretty well, but if there is a toy out of reach he will quickly slide down until he can eat it.
At 5 months everything changed. Life became very easy to manage and really, really fun again. I feel like I can take R anywhere and do anything with him, which means a lot less stress for everyone involved. I think Trig is still a few steps behind on this one, mostly because he doesn’t get to spend as much time with him as I do. I feel like I know him so well and understand what he needs in any moment. I never knew I had such strong instincts, but every feeling I’ve followed so far has been spot on.
Trig is a great dad, and R already looks to him for more rough play. Trig also learned how to snuggle R just right so he lays his head on his shoulder. That is my favorite snuggle and I’m sure it’s Trig’s as well.
We spend all of our free time playing with Raffi. I’m working full time from home with a babysitter or nanny 3 days a week, so even though I’m home and I’m the one feeding him, we don’t get enough time together. On those other days we do a fun activity, play like crazy, and try to have a play date when possible. On the weekends we try to prioritize family time and spend as much time as possible together as a family, whether we’re cleaning the house or playing peekaboo.
Favorite moment of the month? When the first spring sun sprung through the windows and R gazed at the light, fascinated by it.
Random facts:
Sleep: pretty good! Averaging 1-2 wake ups a night. Putting him down awake 50% of the time.
Must haves: his little caterpillar, kick and play piano, an empty plastic bowl, the Babysitter Balance, iPhone for music, Elmo’s song
Wears: size 3 diapers, squeezes into some 3-6 month clothing, 6-9 month onesies
Loves: being thrown in the air, being held and walked around the house, light, music, TV (even though we don’t let him watch it), taking rides in his stroller, rolling around in every direction to reach his toys
Hates: car rides, pureed foods, his high chair, sitting up for too long, not being allowed to pull on my hair, the 10 minutes before we see his dad after work
So much has changed since 5 months, so I can’t wait to share the updates next week.
He is getting SO big and is absolutely adorable!
Aw, what a wonderful post! This is such a fun age, and it only keeps getting better and better 🙂 Your routine sounds great, isn’t just having a routine such a relief? Love the pictures with the blocks, what a great idea!
R makes the BEST faces!
Raffi is so cute! Julianne is putting everything in her mouth too. She likes sitting in her bumbo while I cook. She ignores the toy I give her and touches what is around her. Today it was the bag of tomatoes and a bag of decaf coffee. Crinkle crinkle sounds are her favorite!
Soooooo precious!! Those jumpers rock! Kaylin goes crazy in hers. He def has beautiful eyes just like mama. I think its so cute that yall walk and pickup dad each day!!
I love that first picture so much! It’s adorable! And we ended up switching to zip-up pajamas because of the snap issue. Looks like he’s a strong lil guy!
He get’s more and more adorable everytime I see a picture of him!! What a little cutie!! It sounds like you’re really enjoying every moment of motherhood 🙂
I can’t believe he’s almost 6 months old!! He’s adorable!
